Zanzibar’s main opposition leader and Civic United Front (CUF) Secretary General , Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad is set to make his case with the Zanzibari diaspora living in Toronto, Canada on Sunday.
Maalim Seif, who is in North America to discuss the state of democracy and the recent political impasses in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous island, part of the United Republic of Tanzania will also visit Europe.
While in the U.S, a former prisoner of conscience Maaalim Seif visited Washington, where he met both Republicans and Democrats and was a guest speaker at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), before sitting down for an interview with Voice of America’s ‘Straight Talk Africa’. He also met with the UN Deputy Secretary-General in New York.
Maalim Seif will be meeting with Canadian government officials in Ottawa on Monday.
Last October, the Zanzibari-Canadian community living in Toronto were greatly concerned for their families and friends in Zanzibar. After a surprising move by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) to annul islands general election results that most national and international observers deemed to be fair and free of electoral violations.
CUF claims it had won the island’s 2015 general election.
