An anti-union activists group consisting Zanzibaris from all stripes of Zanzibar political spectrum are taking the legality of 1964 union, between Tanganyika and Zanzibar to an East African court after Zanzibar court refused to hear the groups’ case.
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island. According to Rashid Salum Adiy, one of the activist, the union between the two East African nations is illegal and want it dissolved.
This is not the first time activist from Zanzibar to demand a break in 54 year union and sometime has created turmoil in the island, one of the popular destination of global tourism for its historical location.
