East African-Canadian MP’s rub shoulders with the Aga khan


Recently elected East African-Canadian MP’s Yasmin Ratansi and Arif Virani were among the first government officials to welcome His Highness The Aga Khan at the Parliament Hill in Ottawa yesterday.

The Aga Khan, who is the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslim and Honorary Companion of the Order of Canada, is in Canada to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for discussion on pluralism and diversity.

Aga Khan and his organization, The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is working in over 30 countries, including Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The latest project in East Africa is in Tanzania, where The Aga Khan plans to build a major new university campus in Arusha, in north-eastern Tanzania, the 450-million dollar complex will be developed over the coming 15 years.

“We hope that the University will be a source of effective leadership for the East Africa of tomorrow,” Aga Khan said when announcing the mega project in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 19 August 2007.
